YouTube algorithm change rewards engagement with higher video search rankings

Google are no stranger to changing their algorithms, as we have seen with the algorithm changes that are continuously made to Google Search; making search engine optimisation an ever more difficult task. However as online video usage grows, YouTube have recognised that video engagement is more important than view counts - how long are people viewing content and do they find it relevant?

 

Announced on the Official YouTube Partners and Creators Blog, the YouTube algorithm change will have a profound impact on video content creators. How easy will it be to create more engaging content as opposed to creating content to attract clicks (leading to possible ad revenue)?

Whilst some may argue that the new algorithm is good for ensuring video search relevance, it is unknown whether video likes/dislikes influence the weighting for video ranking. As you may notice, there are a lot of fake videos on YouTube…now only if these videos were demoted in ranking based on the number of dislikes they have received!
